Is Joomla Adsense best for your site?

Or....

"hey, what's up with all the ads!"

You may have noticed I have some Google Awords and Kontera contextual ads on the site now. I am running a little test about what CPM is achievable with the two different kinds of ads.

You are probably familier with Google Adsense on a Joomla site. There are a few sites that really overdo it (no names!) and you can hardly see any any content. Sometimes the adverts (along with some RSS) are the content. I really dislike those sites!

Anyway, I have never really used ads on this site. It is here as a service rather than to generate ad revenue. But I came across a new type of advertising and I thought I would run a test for the benefit of you my readers...

Google Adwords on a Joomla Website

Its easy to , all you need to do is head over and open an account. You then need to create a module and paste your adsense code into it. Adsense dynamically analyzes your page and places relavent ads in the box. When people click on them, you get a few cents.

Of course, like many things, Adsense is like chess. Easy to pick up and had to master. There are so many factors involved to get the maximum click through rate.

You need to have high quality page copy, both to draw the traffic and to help Google find the most relevant ads.

You need to place the ads in a place that people will click on. For example ads at the very top of the page are not useful as viewers have become "banner blind" and treat anything in that location as a ad and ignore it.

Contextual Advertising

I am also using something called contextual advertising. Its a relatively new development. It works more or less like Adsense. Keywords are analyzed and then ads are chosen from the databank. In this case though, the ads appear as links IN the page copy rather than on a list to the side. Supposedly this is supposed to increase the click-through rate (CTR), or annoyance, depending on your point of view!

I am testing Kontera. The blurb from their site states:

ContentLink™s are contextually relevant keywords discovered in real time on a publisher’s web page that are automatically turned into a link to the most relevant and highest paying text ad from one of Kontera’s thousands of advertisers.

Sounds good eh?

This advertising is a little harder to set up. You need some js placed in a module and then you might also need to insert a <div

Stay tuned and in a couple of weeks I'll post some of my findings. In the mean time, feel free to post your thoughts on monetizing your site.

I was tripped up by the Kontera adverts when looking for the download links for the Joomla 1.5 template tutorial. I was looking for a download, perhaps a zip file. The words "download" and "zip" file were hyperlinks so I clicked on them because from the context it looked like something I wanted to click on. I didn't really want a generic download site, or someone trying to sell an unzipping tool, what I wanted was the (most excellent) content provided by this site. I don't have any objection to advertising on sites in general, but the Kontera stuff is confusing (yes I know about the double underline now, but I was tripped up the first time)

Yes, really, from the perspective of a site advertiser, this is intentional. I would think that having them as embedded links leads to a higher click through rate. Next week, I'll blog again about the results!

Hello Barrie,

Nice to see you testing adsense for Joomla.
However using Kontera and Adsense is against the Terms of Service of Google adsense.

You can read about it more at Webmasterworld.
http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum89/14560.htm

For most of use mortals, Kontera is not an option because of there Publisher Qualification rules...

So how is the advertising working out? I have a community based website that does not generate any income it is more an expense at the moment. I've used Google Adsense but it's not really that great in terms of income I know I can improve it but I kinda like the Joomla Banner Module that way I can control who advertises on the site and how much.

Google takes a huge slice of the pie and leaves us webmasters with very little.

Hello Barrie,

Looks like Google wants to stop you from testing :-)
There was an Adsens Policy update today stating more clearly that you cannot run Competitive Ads and Services on your Site!!

Yahoo!!, well not the YPN I mean, but the new post on Jennifer Slegg

It is good to see someone so valued by Google to get a response like this:

"When it comes to enforcing policies on third-party contextual ads, we'll be following the updated program policies instead of the T&Cs on this point. That is to say, publishers may now display other contextual ads on the same site or page as Google ads as long as they don't have the same look and feel as our ads," Brian Axe tells Jennifer Slegg of JenSense.

And Great news for You, you can start your tests again, although I would suggest sending a short mail to the Google adsense team requesting an Oke... just to be save :-)
But you can refer to the post by Jennifer....

Hope You get the Oke to Go!
