Joomla polls and Open SEF

Posted on Aug 28, 2007
Tagged in SEF

I was just setting up a poll on this site and discovered that there was a problem with Open SEF and polls. The redirect URL would not work properly.

Fortunately, the fix was relatively easy...

Just make a link to the poll component in a menu that won't be published. This will then allow Open SEF to properly construct the URL to the poll component.

I've found that this trick is needed for many things not just opensef when creating full urls with the correct itemid. As a result I always create a menu called "hidden menu" on my sites.

Hi Barry,
I would not recommend OpenSEF as an SEF component, rather I suggest using sh404SEF or ArtioSEF (Kanga Internet Version No Advertising). These both handle 404 headers alot better which is better for SEO and users.

There are also several other bugs I found with using OpenSEF. Luckily I think you can export your existing URL's to a new SEF extension but of course I'd use a test server first to make sure.

I've sadly just said goodbye to OpenSEF (it was such a great component) and moved to sh404....there was a glimmer of hope that OpenSEF was continuing development, but I can't see it.

I am also a bit tired of manually correcting all the urls that OpenSEF messes up. Actually i am thinking of migrating my whole site to wordpress :-

How is this sh404SEF better than OpenSEF?

In reality better is a matter of opinion. I found SH404SEF to be better because it had less bugs. Given that openSEF was only a beta and never a stable release its hard to fault it for being buggy but the original author has moved onto new things.

Joomla 1.5 will essentially have SEO friendly URL's built in so a 3rd party component may not be neccessary.

If you are using Joomla 1.0.xx for sometime still I'd move to SH404SEF or ARTIO SEF. These are better components for the job and you can manage URL's easier. Also SH404SEF produces valid page not found 404 errors which help search engines determine if content no longer exists, especially important if you are using Google Adwords.

I could go on for a while but for the sake of brevity I won't, I'd suggest looking further into it yourself.

Regards,
Gavin.
