My Videos Stopped Working When I Upgraded to Joomla 1.5.7
Jan 07 2009 - Tagged in: joomla 1.5
Hopefully, you are a diligent Joomla webmaster and you make sure you keep up to date with releases. But sometimes its not always good to be bleeding edge, maybe just cutting edge is OK.
A while back I upgraded a site to Joomla 1.5.7. All was hunky dory and I continued to work on it, edit articles etc. Then, a few weeks later, I discovered all my videos were not working. Why? Because of a feature that had got snuck into that release.
In 1.5.7 a new feature that filtered the source/HTML of articles had been added. It was a new parameter that was no in the global article parameters.
When it had been added, it didn't have any options set as default. This actually caused a minor weeing contest between some ex and current devs. I had noticed the debate, but didn't think too much of it.
Now, a few weeks later, what had been happening was that I had been editing my articles with the embedded flash objects in them, but had never set any default values for the filter. So, they were getting stripped out, even when I had the WYSIWYG editor turned off.
I realized my mistake and hurriedly set some default values for the new content HTML filter.
Morale of the story? Maybe sometimes its better to keep one step behind the release cycle and THOROUGHLY read the change log.
Or, you could just use a managed Joomla hosting service like Simplweb where we do that for you!

... In my decade of working with open source apps, I've learned to not immediately upgrade a production site (unless it is a critical security patch). Too often I've been bit by a flawed release or a change that took down a key function I was using. Now, I monitor the experiences of other users, looking for problems and solutions. Once I'm sure it's stable and working well, I'll upgrade. Too many painful experiences have made me more cautious about upgrading at the drop of a hat. |

... I decide very often to do no upgrade. So i wait and see what problems give me the new Joomla version. Mostly i upgrade Joomla 2 releases later. |

... Well, now this is a good reason to test your projects before hand all right. Having a less buggy joomla is well worth it to try it out on a test server first. |

... I read this a few days ago and am still wondering...what is the provenance of "weeing?" I take it "pissing match" is a comparable phrase in the American vernacular. |

... I know you are talking about 1.5.7... but I had a similar issue with 1.5.8 Found this article to be very informative... http://docs.joomla.org/ Why_does_some_HTML_get_removed_from_articles_in_version _1.5.8? Even when using wysiwygpro... without making any setting changes, content was stripped. Also noticed that when using the standard included wysiwyg editor... and adjusting the settings referenced in the article... I was able to add the html code I needed without any issues of stripping content. I can't stress the importance of people reading that article... embedding code in content and dealing with the html filters looks to be an active discussion every time I look on a forum. |

... So what settings need to change in order to be able to enter the commands? I am running into this on one of my sites and so far I have tried to edit this and supposedly its suppose to be of non-effect for a Super Admin, but I usually have to go into my User menu and select no editor in order to do this which is not very convenient. |
