New Template Tutorial for 1.5 and two Free Templates
Tagged in Untagged
Note: This PDF version has been updated. An online version of the Joomla 1.5 Template Tutorial is available in the Joomla Tutorials section of this site. PDF version coming soon.
This great new tutorial is a chapter excerpt from the upcoming book, Joomla 1.5: A User's Guide.
This tutorial takes you step by step through creating two templates. The first is a basic one to learn some core Joomla template features and the second creates a more advanced template based from a professional design from Joomlashack. The chapter also details advanced Joomla 1.5 template features such as parameters and overrides and contains a sample set of override files to create a tableless template.
You can download the sample chapter for free in our Joomla Library.
Live demo of the Joomla 1.5 template.

I read through the whole thing. Looks like they haven't resolved the XHTML Tableless standards compliance issue. I thought Johan said with j1.5 it would be possible to create XHTML Tableless and have complete control over the Template output. Too will have to stick to Drupal and wordpress |

I came back specifically to thank Barrie for explaining in his Joomla! v 1.5 Tutorial Guide how you can achieve 100% tableless Joomla! output using JDoc style attributes in a Joomla! template. I am so impressed with the Joomla! developers for providing this capability and equally impressed with you, Barrie, for unearthing and sharing this knowledge freely with the community. It does no good for us unless we know how to do it - together, the developers and trainers make it possible for us. All we have to do is read your guide all the way through (including page 34 ) and follow your very easy to understand instructions. 100% table free for those allergic to td and tr. Sweet. Thanks again and again, Barrie. |

| Thanks for clarifying Barrie but your post never mentioned it. So have you updated the sample chapter. Or is there some forum links that you can point me to. I stopped working with Joomla/Mambo 6 months back, being developing in Wordpress and Drupal. But Have been regularly checking up since the announcement for 1.5 was made. |

| Thanks for sharing this. I think that Gordon may have been confused by the fact that you need to register and log in to get to the download and there is some javascript thing running on your site which makes things like free download and zip point to places we don't want to go to. It took me several false clicks to work out what to do. Total time elapsed, nearly a minute, so not a show stopper. |

Thank you for sharing this priceless information with us Barrie, and for everything you do for our community Big question is, when is 1.5Beta likely to be launched for real? I am planning projects 6 months in advance, and very nervous at the thought of not really knowing when to stop pushing projects down the 1.0.X line, and whether I will be ready to make that transition! I know if I want the latest gossip, happenings, events, releases, updates, tutorials, walkthroughs etc compassdesigns is the place to be! How do you find the time?!!!! I have a small request Barrie, do you think it might be possible to have a pre-order list for your new book? Happy to pay deposit/full-price, safe in the knowledge that "when its released"...."I've got it on my virtual book shelf" |

Hi Barrie. Many thanks. I started reading this about two months ago in my spare time. What little web work I have done has been out of necessity and with little regard for standards. I especially liked that you took the time to provide so many links for background information. I have read everyone of them, which often times those led to others. Finally on my way to understanding CSS, in additon to the real intent of your TUT: Learning to create templates. Not done completely, but this document and the files have been invaluable. Really: Thank you very very much. |

I had to install a nighty build of Joomla! 1.5 to get the tutorial template work, as well as to do some search/replace for some deprecated function names. Also, the resulting appereance of the template on my lab server doesn't completely match the output described in the document. It seems to me, that there is still a lot of work to do on the tutorial and it definitely should be corrected when the Joomla! 1.5 is finished. But never mind, I believe that I can learn a lot from the work. Thank you, Barrie. |

ChrisS: To download the tutorial and related files, just search on Google for the "Joomla15TemplateTutorial.zip". One suggestion for the tutorial: I found the Firefox extension called FireBug - http://www.getfirebug.com/ to be extremely useful for debugging the Joomla templates. I think that it deserves to be mentioned in the tutorial among other development tools. |

Thank you very much Strobl. I found a direct like to the ZIP file via google that bypassed the registration side of things (despite being registered, I just could never get it to let me through) |

Great tutorial but when I try the template TemplateTutorial15Bold with the latest Joomla I get an error -- Fatal error: Call to undefined function sefRelToAbs() --- in each mod in the html folder, first in mod_poll then mod_login, etc. Has maybe Joomla changed since you wrote the template? Thanks |

I've decided to design my first Joomla 1.5 (pure CSS of course) template, and am so confident that I have the neccessary tools via your website to pull this off! I'll let you know how it goes. Cheers. |
