Top Ten Features for Joomla 1.6

What will be in Joomla 1.6?
As Joomla 1.5 was in development, a clear path was outlined that described much more frequent milstones in terms of development. This basically meant faster progression to add features as Joomla moved from 1.5 to 1.6 etc.
I came across a recent forum post by Andrew Eddie that stated we might see Joomla 1.6 as early as August!
1.6 is still in the planning stage. We are current assessing 109 feature requests for inclusion ranging from very big things (like ACL) to very small things. No dates for anything are set but I'd like to tepidly "aim" for an August-ish release (all things going well).
Now, whether we see this target met is not the topic of this post, rather its what new features might we see in Joomla 1.6?
On the Joomla forum is a board that has been taking white paper submissions fo a couple of months. The deadline was the 25th of March, so now as the dust settles, we can see what white papers have been placed under review. Looking purely at views and posts, we can see the following features as hot items.
- [31]Option to turn off Mootools
- [32]Layout control for Front Page articles
- [15]Access Management in Joomla! 1.6
- [34]Content versioning for Joomla!
- [33]Remove unusefull stuff
- [34]Multi-Blogger Component/Module
- [33]Section/Category Manager
- [33]Expanded Search Capabilities
- [32]Bring back blog-content section menu link
- [15]extend DB layer - implement PDO, or other DB-s like Pg
As you read through these, a another valuable resource is the Joomla Developer White Paper Analysis that is on the Joomla! Devel Discussion.
My predictions?
I think we will see improved ACL, some progress towards version control and some minor tweaks like Mootools options and bring back the menu link.
As for the other features, well, what you you like to see in Joomla 1.6?

... I have no IDEA why Joomla 1.5 behaves differently. In my 1st site "PDF Indexer" works great and in my 2nd site, it indexes only part of my PDFs, both are hosted at www.siteground.com. With respect to my 3rd site, I am not able to install any of the extensions (www.nettigritty.com). All are updated and are running Joomla 1.5.7. WHY? I started with Joomla and will be with Joomla |

... I want to be able to post one article in multiple categories, to be able to have infinite depth (section > category > subcategory > subsubcategory, etc...), and accurate PDF rendering. Why is it so difficult? I do love Joomla though, very easy to deploy a powerful site. |

... Is there a release schedule for 1.6 anywhere? Is there absolutely any kind of rough time frame for 1.6? |

... I doubt it - it's possible you may see a beta in that time period, though. But I have absolutely no information to base that assumption on. It's merely a guess. |

... Would like to see this as a built in feature or an addition to Joomla that in the parameter fields for an article I can specify the priority of a page for the Google Sitemap. |

... My personal chart? 1. ACL 2. Content versioning 3. Sections/categories management 4. Multiblogger I use Joomla 1.5 for a lot of my sites, but without ACL management this CMS is very difficult to use in enterprise contest. |

... What commenting system is this? I think I know, but it looks like you have customized it a bit. I have spent 2 hours evaluating commenting solutions for Joomla and they are all VERY WEAK. I'm about ready to scrap Joomla altogether because the commenting solutions are so poor. Wordpress has a very simple and easy to use commenting solution developed right into the product. Do the people who write Joomla even have a clue how important this feature is? Joomla also lacks the ability to assign a single article to multiple categories ... again very easy and useful in Wordpress. The only downside to wordpress is not being able to turn off the date function by post. One click upgrades to Wordpress too. I'd like you see you get involved with Wordpress CMS templates because I like your work. "The name has been registered use another name". A perfect example of what I mean! |

... Its called Jomcomment and I have not modified it. Its worth remebering that Joomla is not blog software like wordpress. But then again, you can't run United Nation sites on Wordpress |

... The improved ACL would be huge! To be able to control groups, users and content more effectively would drastically increase the value of Joomla. |

... Joomla! 1.6 has been talked about for a couple of years now as I see. The differences between 1.0 and 1.5 are gigantic, yet I consider that 1.0 had stuff 1.5 doesn't (like create module positions easily). 1.6 sounds promising, yet I can;t wait for Joomla! to take a gigantic leap and release Joomla! 2.0!!! Now that will be sweet! Meanwhile, I cannot wait to test 1.6. |

... Hello everyone, Even though Joomla! 1.5 offers everything I need at the moment, I admit that it needs a few improvements that I hope will be addressed in Joomla! 1.6. Moreover, could you let us know when the release will be "released"? I can hardly wait! |
