What is a Domain Name
Tagged in Untagged
Your domain name is what people will type into their browser, e.g. www.yourname.com. This name must be registered with a central international agency and renewed every year. Think of it as the mailing address for your website. Without a domain, mail (or in this case, viewers) can't find you.
Its usually best to select the best "extension" for your web site:
.COM - used for commercial and personal sites
.NET - recommended for companies involved in Internet infrastructure
.ORG - recommended for not-for-profit organizations

What is the domain name system?
The Domain Name System (DNS) helps users to find their way around the
Internet. Every computer on the Internet has a unique address - just
like a telephone number - which is a rather complicated string of
numbers. It is called its "IP address" (IP stands for "Internet
Protocol"). IP Addresses are hard to remember. The DNS makes using the
Internet easier by allowing a familiar string of letters (the "domain
name") to be used instead of the arcane IP address. So instead of
typing 207.151.159.3, you can type www.internic.net. It is a "mnemonic"
device that makes addresses easier to remember.
What does it mean to "register" a domain name?
When you register a domain name, you are inserting an entry into a
directory of all the domain names and their corresponding computers on
the Internet.
How do I register a domain name?
Domain names ending with .biz, .com, .info, .name, .net or .org can be
registered through many different companies (known as "registrars")
that compete with one another.
The registrar you choose will ask you to provide various contact and technical information that makes up the registration. The registrar will then keep records of the contact information and submit the technical information to a central directory known as the "registry." This registry provides other computers on the Internet the information necessary to send you e-mail or to find your web site. You will also be required to enter a registration contract with the registrar, which sets forth the terms under which your registration is accepted and will be maintained.
How much does it cost?
Registering a new domain can cost from $10 to $50 depending on the extension.

Domain names are more important for SEO than ever today (October 05, 2006). The reason is that search engines have had to discount more and more on-page factors due to webmasters and their SEO efforts to get top ranking. With less factors to rank webpages with, search engines are looking for other things to base a website rank in their search results. In-bound links were what made Google what it is today, but even they are discounted now due to webmasters linking to everything they can find to increase their PageRank. But that is another story. Domain names are the one on-page factor that is hard to cheat on. After all, how many top level domains can a site have? MSN understands this and ranks a website with a keyword phrase within the domain name well ahead of other sites. For example, I registered a domain name (american-pitbulls.us) for a pitbull site and setup a blog about six months ago. Three months later I did a search on MSN for 'american pitbulls' and my blog came up #1! (Page 1 of 70,571 results) Keep these factors in mind... The site had: No PageRank A new domain name, 3 months old then No links No SEO - a WordPress Blog The blog is still at #1 on MSN today ahead of all 70k sites. Feel free to check yourself, AdSense... http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=american pitbulls&FORM=MSNH The full url is http://american-pitbulls.us/wp I'm getting traffic from Google as well now. Anyway, you can see how important the domain name is in ranking well in MSN. Even at third in the search engine wars, MSN can push out a lot of traffic. Robert McCulloch http://attorneycollect.com/ |

I think I might agree to disagree . Most SEO experts agree that domain names are less important now. I ranks very well for Joomla search terms but don't have it in my domain. |

It is probably of no consequence whatsoever but I just looked up the suggested MSN search (http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=american pitbulls&FORM=MSNH) and didn't find a mention of Robert's site on the first eleven pages. So perhaps Barrie is right after all. Nick Kotarski http://kotarski.co.uk |
