Community Sites with Community Builder and Simplweb

My bags are almost packed for heading to Denver for the CMS Expo next week, and I spent a few minutes making sure I had all my ski gear accounted for.

Skiing? Joomla? Wha?

One December 4th and 5th, there is a great two day Expo and training conference in Denver. On Saturday the 6th, there will be an ad hoc group of people heading to Vail for some skiing, snowboarding, or just plain 'ol sliding down the hill on a baking tray (try it, its pretty extreme).

I was pondering to myself as I packed "how can I try to get a bit of organization... dare I even say... community, among the people heading to Vail on Saturday". Of course, we could have an open bar, but is there another way?

One of my sessions I am presenting at the EXPO is Online Community Building with Joomla. I thought how better to try and get people to organically share information about the Saturday plans?!

So, I whipped out a site using Simplweb in a few seconds (literally) and proceeded to play with some of the user profile tools in Community Builder. In a few short minutes I had a neat Joomla site where people can register, enter some information, and contact each other to share plans, transportation etc.

  • An instant Joomla site - Free trial
  • Great open source extensions - Free
  • Ten minutes work - (done in lunch hour) Free
  • A quick and easy site to bring people together - priceless

See you on the slopes after the EXPO
