Joomla 1.5, SEF, Traffic and Getting Naked

Over at Copyblogger, Sonia Simone made a recent post about Getting Naked. No, it wasn't a college party, but rather the concept of being honest, sometimes painfully so in your blog. Current wisdom among bloggers is that this is a good standard to follow, you'll see popular bloggers ranging from Dooce, SEOMoz and even Joomla's Alledia sharing things that traditionally would be thought of as perhaps private. In each case, the sharing has been well received, and all importantly, worthy of traffic.

OK, so in my last post, Live Day 1 SEF URL problems I explained my master plan to do some htaccess redirection for all my old links.

Now, despite my current issue getting data on 404's, I can still make some headway because I *do* know some of the URL's that need redirecting.

If you have several Joomla sites you maintain, its worth adding the official Joomla developer blog to your RSS feed collection.

In a more recent post, Wilco Jansen described an important change to how SEF is implemented in Joomla 1.5. The main point is that you will now have to make a database change if you want to upgrade a site from RC3 to a newer version.

Better SEO Titles for Joomla 1.5

Back in October there was a brief discussion about the all important page title tag in Joomla 1.5 and its importance for SEO. Essentially, in 1.0 your page titles would always get appended (unless you had a SEF component) leading to potentially long titles. In 1.5, the behavior was changed so that if there was a page/article title, the global site title would be ignored.

That's all well and good, but the reality of SEO is not so clear cut.

Day 4 Duplicate SEF URLs after Migration

As mentioned in my last post, I have now managed to get a couple of blogging extensions installed and have been pruning my menus. I had planned to re-build these after migration to 1.5 to better fit my new Joomla Blog concept.

On examining one of the submenus I had not intended to change, I noticed something strange.
