How to Set up Registration as a Google Analytics Goal in Joomla 1.5

May 29 2009 - Tagged in:

Over the last week I have been talking (How to Track Offsite Links for Google Goals in Joomla) about how to use Google Analytics for your Joomla Joomla site to better track conversions, marketing efforts, and the usability of your site.

Allowing users to register at a Joomla site is very very common. It also makes a great goal to track. Discovering the URL to use in the funnel path is a little tricky, as there is a confirmation email involved. When users register on a Joomla Joomla 1.5 site, they get a confirmation email with a link to click on. This is the URL you need to use as the goal URL.

But for your continuing Google happiness, here is the inside scoop on how to do this, whatever your site, this URL is always the same, and here it is.

How to Track Offsite Links for Google Goals in Joomla

Google Goals. Love 'em, use 'em, make business decisions based on them.

If you didn't know what a "Google goal" is, its a feature of Google Analytics. It allows you to set up a specific and discrete goal for something on your website. Examples might be:

  • Making a purchase
  • Downloading a white paper
  • Filling out a contact form
  • Downloading a file

I'd thought I'd share some help I passed onto students from the Web 2.0 Marketing with Joomla Graduate Course. The class are developing goals for their case study websites and pondering how best to set them up.

Free Tweet This Plugin for Joomla 1.5

May 04 2009 - Tagged in:

Over the last week weeks I have be preparing for my graduate class (starts Saturday!) on Web 2.0 Marketing with Joomla. I was on the lookout for a simple plugin that could provide a Tweet this link to twitter and show it in blog posts and articles.

I was surprised that I couldn't find one, apart from the Javascript "tweetmeme" script. This works well, but inserts *their* twitter name into the tweet.

So, I pinged Fotis at Joomlaworks and we collaborated on an easy solution. The AutoFooter Tweet This Joomla plugin that will allow you to put HTML code as well as a tweet this link in all articles.

How to Create an iContact Segment for who has Clicked Your Emails

Apr 16 2009 - Tagged in:

If you didn't know, I am a great fan of iContact.

I think that every website should be engaged in email marketing, and I think 3rd party systems are better than Joomla Joomla extensions.

But there is one feature that's missing, the ability to create a segment of anyone that's ever opened or clicked on one of your emails.

Being able to segment your email lists is real really important. Companies such as Amazon excel at this and their ROI on email shows it.

How does iContact Handle Segments

You can have up to 10 segments in iContact. You can also create custom fields and use them to create these segments. There is also a neat feature where you can look at the tracking of a single email and create a segment of everyone that has clicked/opened.

The trouble is, it will create a segment for each email, and you are limited to only 10. There really needs to be a feature where you can ADD to a segment, but until then, here is the workaround :)
