5 Tips to Promoting Your Content

May 13 2009 - Tagged in:

Recently I wrote an article that proved to be immensely popular. I then thought it would be good to reach out to a favorite Joomla Joomla! blog of mine: Compass Designs. Here is a companion piece to my original post on promoting your Joomla Joomla content, Five (more) tips to promoting your content.

Why you shouldn't outsource your new business idea

Apr 21 2009 - Tagged in:

outsourcing conspiracy bannerBrian Clark and Jon Morrow over at Copyblogger just released an interesting free 31 page report about outsourcing for web entrepreneurs. I think there has definitely been a growth in the perception that outsourcing is the secret to being successful these days:

  • All the "get rich quick" gurus seem to have outsourcing as a key part of their business model
  • Overseas "rent-a-coder" type sites that offer cheap labor are becoming more and more prevalent
  • Quite a few Joomla Joomla-based shops even have outsourcing as a key aspect of running their company business
  • Even design is getting outsourced, as evident by all the PSD to HTML sites that have sprung up

Brian and Jon make the argument that outsourcing is not all that its cracked up to be, especially for those who 'they" say its best for... new people with a new idea they are trying to launch.

Reputation Management Live Case Study Sweetspot.ca

Mar 17 2009 - Tagged in:

Last week I posted about Reputational Management in Twitter, interestingly enough, this concept of online reputational management seems to be cropping up more and more on my radar.

There are even web applications springing up that will aggregate online references to yourself and searching for "web reputation management" get's over 800,000 hits.

Only this morning I see an interesting example chirping its ways through the Twit-o-Sphere about some dubious reporting about a site that was running Joomla Joomla and switched to a custom .NET platform.

The interesting part is that we can watch the thing evolve in real time and see what players catch on.

Why Digg is Useless

Mar 11 2009 - Tagged in:

A blog is a modern communication vehicle that is becoming more and more important in today's Web-connected world.

/rant on

A blog is not TrackBacks, pings, Digg It buttons, blog rolls, permalinks, or Google ad sense. You will see all of these things on a blog (hopefully not all at once), but these are just features of a blog. You can have a successful blog, even the top 50 heavyweight, without any of these. As you create your blog, make sure you don't let the trees get in the way of seeing the great potential of the woods.

I would not go so far as to say that there are not benefits to be found in social bookmarking sites such as Digg or del.icio.us, but I don't think it's as critical as people make it out to be - for several reasons.

How to Choose Between Joomla, Drupal and Wordpress

Mar 03 2009 - Tagged in:

Joomla vs Drupal vs WordpressOver the last few weeks there has been a lot of activity in blogs and Twitter about Joomla vs Drupal vs Wordpress. This seemed to start with a Slashdot article and then the usual respective groups launching diatribes about how their CMS was best and the others were the spawn of the devil. OK, maybe that's an exaggeration, but perhaps not far off. Those comment flame wars can get pretty testy. Then we saw couple more posts, occasionally with some clear misconceptions included.

At the same time there has been an "Iron Chef" type showdown between some top respective developers to build a site powered by X that meets a specific specification.

With all this activity about comparing these three open source web publishing scripts, I thought I would provide people with a really really easy decision matrix so you can figure out which one you need to use.

Jan 27 2009 - Tagged in:

The online course, Teaching Sells, is one of the best resources to help you build and grow a profitable online business. The guy behind it, Brian Clark is the founding editor of Copyblogger, and co-founder of Teaching Sells.

You might recall last year I posted about his course and how Brian was closing his doors to new sign ups. Its been some time come, but I am excited to say that Brian is re-launching his course with all the new material he and his partner Tony have been developing.
