Struggling to get your Joomla web site up and running?

You need a comprehensive easy to read guide that explains everything you need to know in a way YOU can understand it.

Joomla is one of the most powerful open source content management systems on the planet. It powers everything from government and corporate sites to ecommerce and hobby sites. There are over 20 million websites powered by Joomla on the web.

Some of them look great and are successful sites, some of them don't and are a money pit for the webmaster.

Here's the big secret.

They all use the identical codebase of Joomla, available for free, but the difference is HOW the site is built, set up and configured.

Photo of Barrie NorthMy name is Barrie North and I started using Joomla as a web designer in 2005. I quickly found that Joomla is astonishingly easy to use, but equally as complicated to set up. In 2006 my company, Joomlashack, completed over 50 custom websites. We found one common theme in many of these projects, people found Joomla powerful, flexible, but difficult to set up. Even clients that only initially wanted a custom template decided to ask for our expertise in installing, configuring and populating their website.

Getting involved in helping to educate Joomla users was a natural thing for me to do as my educational qualifications are actually in teaching. I am a certified high school teacher, I also have a background in educational consulting, specializing in developing curriculum and in training teachers how to create rich learning experiences.

I decided to use this expertise to fill the need of helping people who were not code experts to build successful Joomla websites. The result was numerous FAQ's on the Joomla forums and dev site and a host of free tutorials and guides about Joomla. The de facto guide for creating Joomla templates was written by me (it's available for free at joomla.org, don't get caught paying for a pale imitation)

People kept asking me to put all this great writing together into a single package and I have, the result is a 260+ page ebook:

At over 250 pages this PDF ebook helps you understand how to administer your site. Written by a nationally acclaimed teacher and member of the official Joomla documentation Working Group.

This manual is about Joomla, the popular award winning open source content management system. It takes you step by step through everything you need to develop a professional looking web site powered by Joomla. The manual gives a general overview of management of the CMS and explains how to create and lay out content to the best effect. Other chapters include explanations of organizing your content, component and modules.

Who is it for?

This manual is aimed primarily at those that are learning to use Joomla to create a web site, either for themselves or web designers doing so for their clients. It's easy to read and low on technical jargon. It doesn't assume you know PHP, CSS or any other of the many acronyms common to web applications. The author, Barrie North has a rich background in education and curriculum as well as web design and Joomla, and has written numerous guides used on the official Joomla.org website. He has undergone National Certification and has won national awards for curriculum development. The result is a manual accessible to everyone.

What does it cover?

This manual can be used in several ways, for instance you can start at the beginning and move through it methodically, chapter by chapter as you develop your website. The manual has been carefully laid out so that introductory concepts are explained in the earlier chapters. These basics are then further developed in later chapters where the more advanced concepts are tackled. You can also use the manual as a handy trouble shooting reference, the detailed contents enables users to easily identify particular concepts as needed.
